Description

The Vocal Channel Strip, Rebuilt for Modern Mixing

Ask any mix engineer what eats their time and the answer is vocals: tuning, cleaning, de-essing, compressing in stages, saturating, widening, placing in space — a dozen moves across a dozen plugins, all interacting in ways that are hard to keep coherent.

Neural DSP Mantra approaches the vocal like a console channel strip rebuilt for 2025. Launched in July 2025 as Neural DSP’s first vocal production plugin (now v1.1.0), it arranges every essential process in true signal-flow order — correction, dynamics, tone, width, space — inside one phase-coherent plugin. For mixing and mastering work, that means fewer phase surprises, fewer gain-staging headaches, and a vocal that sits in the mix faster.

Price: €59.99 (regular €189, ~68% off). SKU: NEURALDSP-MANTRA. Category: Mix & Master Plugins. Brand: Neural DSP.

Correction: Surgical Front-End Processing

A mix lives or dies at the source, and Mantra’s Correction section is a proper front end. Tune offers real-time pitch correction with Tolerance (correction threshold) and Humanize (preserves vibrato and natural drift) — transparent enough for acoustic and jazz, aggressive enough for modern pop and trap when pushed.

Sculpt is the standout for mix engineers: an adaptive EQ that analyzes the voice and microphone in real time, continuously adjusting. It handles the moving resonances that static EQ can’t catch — and in Mixing Mode it gains enhanced dynamic spectral shaping at full resolution. The noise Gate, De-Esser, and 4-band parametric EQ with HP/LP filters complete a front end that would normally take four separate plugins.

Dynamics & Saturation: Three Stages of Mix Glue

The Multimode Compressor is essentially three mix buses in one: Tube delivers LA-2A-style optical leveling for smooth, invisible control; Stress brings Distressor-style FET aggression for vocals that need to punch through dense arrangements; Multi applies OTT-style multiband intensity for the hyper-polished modern sound. Switching characters mid-mix takes one click instead of a plugin swap and gain re-match.

The Multimode Saturation stage — Tape, Tube (Culture-Vulture-style harmonics), Digital (bitcrush) — is where mixes gain density. A touch of Tape after compression glues the vocal to the instrumental; Tube drive adds the harmonic content that helps vocals translate on small speakers; Digital grit is there when the production calls for edge. On the mix bus or drum bus, these same stages pull double duty.

Space That Mixes Itself: Ducked Delay, Reverb & Width

Here’s where Mantra earns its place in a mastering-grade template: the Multimode Delay (Analog BBD, Circular in the Lexicon PCM-70 tradition, Tape à la RE-201, Dual) and Multimode Reverb (Hall, Plate, Ambiance) each carry a built-in ducker. The effect tails automatically retreat under the dry vocal — the classic mix technique of sidechained ambience, implemented per-engine with zero routing. Lead vocal intelligibility is preserved no matter how lush the space gets.

Harmonies (up to 8 pitch-shifted voices, DI Mute for isolated auditioning) builds background stacks without cluttering the session with tracks, while the Modulation section (2290-style Chorus, Flanger, Phaser) and Neural DSP’s proprietary Doubler handle stereo width — the final 10% that separates a demo vocal from a finished record.

Tracking Mode vs Mixing Mode in the Studio Workflow

Tracking Mode — low latency, light CPU — belongs on the record chain: the artist monitors the fully processed vocal while cutting takes, which consistently yields more confident performances. Mixing Mode then takes over with full-resolution processing and enhanced Sculpt spectral shaping for the final balance. The same instance, the same settings, evolving with the session — no printing, no chain rebuilds between stages.

FAQ

How does Mantra fit into an existing mix template?
As the vocal channel strip: insert it first on the lead vocal for correction and dynamics, and let its internal delay/reverb/ducking replace some or all of your vocal send effects. Many engineers keep it from tracking through final mix.

Is the pitch correction transparent enough for natural genres?
Yes. With Tolerance set conservatively and Humanize engaged, Tune corrects intonation while preserving vibrato and phrasing character — suitable for singer-songwriter, jazz, and acoustic material, not just pop.

What’s the practical benefit of the built-in duckers?
They replicate sidechain-ducked ambience without routing: delay and reverb tails automatically dip under the dry vocal, keeping the lead forward and intelligible while the space blooms in the gaps — a staple pro mixing technique, done per-engine.

Does it work at high sample rates for mastering-grade sessions?
Mixing Mode runs full-resolution processing with enhanced Sculpt dynamic spectral shaping, designed for final-mix detail. It supports 64-bit VST2/VST3/AU/AAX hosts on Windows 10+ and macOS 13+ (Apple Silicon native).
